Even your solar panels are smart, and here’s how

October 31st, 2018 | By Roger Kuznia

We live in a world with devices that are increasingly smart — smartphones, smart TVs, even smart thermostats Pink Energy installs one as part of every solar installation it does!). All of this smart technology makes our lives easier and/or better in many different ways.

Good news: Your solar panels are smart, too.

The solar panels that Pink Energy installs come with SolarEdge power optimizers, which are small devices that plug into every solar panel in your array that do three very important things. First, according to Solar Edge, the optimizers “increase energy output from PV (photovoltaic) systems by constantly tracking the maximum power point of each module individually.” That is to say, your panels communicate with one another to deliver as much power as possible at all times, regardless of conditions.

Notice the silver, square boxes attached to the mounting racks. Each of these optimizers plug into your solar panels to improve efficiency and ensure safety.[/caption]

Second, these power optimizers monitor the performance of each panel and communicate that to your inverter, which sends the information to the SolarEdge online monitoring platform via a GSM (global system for mobile) antenna or Zigbee device. So in the small chance that you have an issue with any of your solar panels, it can be easily identified which one needs attention.

Finally, these power optimizers come equipped with the unique “SafeDC” feature, which will automatically reduce the direct current voltage produced by your panels to a safe level whenever the inverter or grid is shut down. That means that your panels won’t continue producing energy when there is no place for that energy to go. If your panels continued to produce energy while the power grid was down, that would create a dangerous “islanding” effect for utility workers sent to repair your lines. That can’t happen.

And if you ever need service performed on your inverter, that device is easily turned off with the flip of a switch located at the bottom of the inverter (take a peek at the accompanying picture). Disabling the inverter puts your panels into safety mode.

We already know that using solar energy is a smart thing to do for the environment, but now, it is smarter in terms of performance and safety. Beyond that, you stand to save tens of thousands of dollars over the lifespan of your solar system.

With our innovative solar program, homeowners can go solar for $0 up-front cost, save money on their electric bills, and generate their own clean energy. The solar panels installed on your home are American-made and come with a 30-year warranty, with many panels expected to last well beyond that.
