Solar becoming major emphasis for top U.S. businesses

All across America, more and more people are finding the value in investing in renewable energy such as solar panels. The same can be said for businesses. They see investing in solar energy as an opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint. Whether it’s installing solar on rooftops, on parking canopies or at off-site ground-mounted installations, businesses have plenty of options to utilize this renewable energy source.

Some of the largest corporations that do business in the U.S. are leading the way in solar panel installations. We know this from an annual report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) that tracks the amount of solar capacity among businesses in 43 states. Below are the leading brands in terms of megawatts (MW) of solar installed.

It’s no surprise to see Apple at the top, as it has been globally powered by 100 percent renewable energy since 2018. With multiple projects across the globe, Apple has been vocal about going solar. Not far behind is Amazon, which recently pledged to power itself with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025.

Understanding business’ commitment to solar

With so many giants of the technology and retail industry charging towards solar, it’s important to understand just how heavily invested into solar these companies are compared to the average homeowner.

For example, Apple installed 398 megawatts, which is 398 million watts of solar. Given that the average size home installation is approximately 6 kilowatts, that means Apple’s solar power could energize 66,383 homes. Adding the solar commitment of the top 10 companies listed above, they could power more than 387,000 homes.

Businesses and homeowners are choosing to add solar for the same reasons. It boils down to potentially saving money and reducing your carbon footprint. Whether it’s a single home, a private business or a public business, solar gives homeowners and companies of all sizes a supplemental power source.

While a company’s solar commitment is best measured by amount of megawatts installed, it’s cool to see how retailers are not just leveraging massive solar farms, but integrating that even in on-site arrays. Target is leading the way, with 513 individual on-site and offsite solar installations. By the end of 2020, these numbers are expected to increase exponentially.
