LaFontaine Auto Dealership Sees Value in Solar

December 14th, 2021 | By Chad McComas

In 2020, Pink Energy finished installing the largest array of solar panels on any automobile dealership in the Midwest with 428 panels (150 KW) on the rooftop of the LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Fenton, Michigan.

This LaFontaine dealership has now enjoyed more than a full calendar year of solar power since adding the panels, and their production has been right where we anticipated. That might surprise some, given that Michigan isn’t known as the nation’s sunshine capital. But solar works well in Michigan in large part because of the high cost of electricity in state. According to September 2021 data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Wolverine State’s cost for commercial electricity is 12th highest in the nation. (It is similarly high for residential customers.)

What’s great is that LaFontaine is seeing the results too, and the panels are also helping them accomplish additional goals too.

“It looks like we were on target to realize over $45,000 in energy savings from solar,” said Gary Laundroche, Facilities Director for the LaFontaine Automotive Group. “Solar contributes to our total efforts towards efficiency and sustainability. This roof mounted system isn’t visible from the ground, but we have videos of the roof and installation that we have used to promote our efforts.”

LaFontaine Dealership Shows Leadership in Sustainability

Solar panels were a perfect fit for the Fenton dealership as it aligned with the company’s goals of being energy conscious and practicing sustainability. The dealership has four stores that are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, with two Gold and two Silver certifications. Other LaFontaine locations also practice sustainable energy efforts with LED lighting upgrades being incorporated across all facilities. More than $1 million has been spent to upgrade facilities in their footprint. Since adding the solar panel systems, there has been “resounding” support for the move from both customers and their staff.

LaFontaine elected to have Pink Energy install its panels due to Pink Energy’s expertise and leadership in the solar industry. Laundroche said there is potential to work with Pink Energy on future projects once other contracts with alternate energy providers expire.

LaFontaine’s success is another proof point of the value of solar not only in Michigan, but anywhere Pink Energy serves customers throughout our company footprint.
