Introducing the Interconnections Department

Today is our look at the Pink Energy Interconnections Department.

Linking Your Power

Connecting your solar system to the grid sounds like a simple process, at least for an electrician. But it’s not just connecting wires and flipping a switch. Depending on where you live and what utility company provides service to your home, the process can be pretty complicated. That’s why Pink Energy has a department named Interconnections that is dedicated to getting our customers hooked into the grid.

Getting Hooked In

Without the Interconnections department, our customers would not be able to turn their systems on. According to department manager Christine Howell, “We are the liaison between the customers and their utility company.”

Howell has worked in the Interconnections department since 2019 and has been a part of Pink Energy’s expansive growth during that time. When she started with the company, six people worked in the department. They now have closer to 50 between our corporate headquarters offices in North Carolina and Michigan.

Keeping in Touch

Our working relationships with the utility companies are important for several reasons. First and foremost, we want our customers to have the systems installed in a timely manner. We also want our customers to earn every benefit available to them through their solar system. Being connected to the grid allows solar customers to sell Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) and enjoy possible net metering (where available) benefits on their electric bill.

It’s Complicated

Similar to our Permitting department, Interconnections follows the different rules and regulations of each state and utility company we work with. Because of this, our Interconnection Specialists each deal with about three different states.

Most of their work amounts to contacting either the customer, the utility company, or other departments here at Pink Energy to get systems turned on. Due to all the cooperation that’s required, Howell says her most common hurdle is getting everyone on the same page.

“Our department’s biggest challenge is that we are so third party dependent.”

Connecting You

She wants our clients and prospective customers to know that our Interconnections team is always working hard to get their systems online as fast as possible. In fact, if you’re making the wise move of adding a Pink Energy system to your home, you may be talking to her or one of her colleagues soon.

Howell and our Interconnections crew are crucial to getting, and keeping, our customers up and running with solar power. She loves her job so much, she’s in it for the long haul, and we at Pink Energy, and you as customers, are the better for it.

“I plan to retire here,” Howell said.
