Duquesne Light increases power rates

December 28th, 2018 | By Roger Kuznia

All electricity customers deal with rate increases imposed by their utility provider on a routine basis. Come Saturday, count Duquesne Light customers among those who will see their cost for power rising.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission recently approved a plan that will see the average residential Duquesne Light customer’s bill rise by 4.44 percent, meaning that the monthly electric bill for those using 600 kilowatt hours a month will increase from $98.15 to $102.51. That means an additional $40.5 million is headed to Duquesne Light instead of the $81.6 million that the power company requested in its initial filing earlier in the year.

Duquesne Light provides electricity for nearly 600,000 customers in Allegheny and Beaver counties, covering a good portion of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The increase borne by those customers will be partially offset by a one-time refund of $24 million to Duquesne Light customers stemming from savings the power company is enjoying from the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which lowered the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent.

Residential customers will see an average credit of $25.61 coming on their bill for the Jan. 2019 billing statement, while refunds for commercial and industrial customers will come over a two-month period.

Still, that average rate increase of 4.44 percent becomes the new normal for residential customers, and they have little choice but to pay for Duquesne’s cost of doing business.

SOLAR QUESTIONS? Pink Energy’s solar education blog has answers!

Thing is, Duquesne Light customers do have a choice of adding solar with help from Pink Energy. Installing a solar system at your home would help insulate yourself from those continuous rate increases, as you would benefit from all the power that your home produces, whether it’s used directly by your home or sent back to the power grid for a credit. With your solar payment locked in, your payment will remain the same, while your non-solar neighbors will be forced to take on the full brunt of future rate increases. That will save you thousands of dollars.

Once your system is paid off, you’ll be generating completely free energy! Our solar panels have a 30-year warranty, and many panels are expected to last well beyond that. The average homeowner will save tens of thousands of dollars over the lifespan of his/her solar panel system.

Beyond the financial benefits, solar is a huge win for the environment. Unlike the fossil fuels burned to generate most of our electricity, solar panels emit no greenhouse gases. All they do is sit on your roof or ground-mounted array and generate power quietly and efficiently for your home.

If you’re fed up with paying for your power company’s continuous rate increases, we want to talk with you. With our innovative solar program, homeowners can go solar for $0 up-front cost, which is a huge plus for those who say they can’t afford to go solar. Yes you can!

Please feel free to fill out the form below or contact Pink Energy at (877) 4-GO-Pink, and one of our solar representatives will help you determine whether your home qualifies for this program.
