DTE Energy customers face another potential rate increase

July 11th, 2019 | By Roger Kuznia

Just two months after DTE Energy received clearance from the state’s Public Service Commission to raise rates for its residential customers by 7 percent, the power company is seeking a 9 percent increase from residential customers in its latest rate case filed with the PSC last week.

Per a report from FOX 2 Detroit, DTE’s requested $328 million rate increase will go toward paying for the company’s tree trimming program, modernizing the electrical grid and providing IT services that will enhance its customer service.

Michigan residents already pay the highest rate for electricity in the Midwest, and that rate of nearly 15.5 cents per kilowatt hour is 12th highest in the nation, according to April 2019 data provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

DTE rate case draws attention of Michigan AG

The proposed rate increase on top of the one approved in May has caught the eye of Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel, who promises to intervene in this case, and others like it in the state.

“Months after it received a rate increase from MPSC, DTE shows it is completely unconcerned about the savings accounts of its consumers,” Nessel said in a statement. “Today I’m putting them on notice: I plan to vigorously review all their filings and make certain the priority in this case is ensuring affordable energy for Michigan consumers, not dividends for their shareholders.”

Solar panels provide energy choice and electric bill savings

As DTE’s costs for doing business continue to rise, you may be tired as a consumer for paying for these escalating rates for your electricity. Going solar with help from Pink Energy is a way to insulate yourself from these rate increases and own your power, not just rent it from the power company. DTE customers also get battery storage included with their purchase, giving customers the ability to benefit from solar energy during power outages or at night, when your panels can’t produce any energy.
