Earlier this year, the U.S. solar industry celebrated crossing the threshold of 2 million solar installations, just three years after reaching the 1 million mark. This week brings additional proof of solar growth as the U.S. installed 2.7 gigawatts of solar in the first quarter of 2019, which is the most solar installed in that time frame.

Those figures come from Wood Mackenzie and the Solar Energy Industries Association, and the numbers represent a 10 percent gain from the first quarter of 2018. Wood Mackenzie forecasts 25 percent year-over-year growth for 2019, which would account for 13 GW of solar installed. Take a look at the chart below that showcases solar’s ascent.

SEIA-2019-solar installs

These 2.7 gigawatts of energy are more than double the 1.21 gigawatts Doc Brown was looking to harness to send Marty McFly back to 1985 in the movie classic “Back to the Future.” We’re talking serious amounts of power, and that number continues to grow.

“The first quarter data and projections for the rest of the year are promising for the solar industry,” SEIA CEO and president Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement. “However, if we are to make the kind of progress we need to make the 2020s The Solar Decade, we will need to make substantial policy and market advances.”

Utility-scale a big driver

While utility-scale solar accounts for the largest piece of the 2.7 GW installed (it accounted for 1.6 GW of that), the residential sector grew as well, showing 6 percent growth to 603 megawatts in the first quarter. While residential sector numbers are very much reliant on markets that have already proven their zeal for solar, such as California and the Northeast, this report interestingly notes that “29 percent of residential capacity in Q1 2019 came from markets outside the top 10 solar states by capacity, the highest share for emerging markets in industry history.”

And that’s where Pink Energy comes in.

Pink Energy’s role in driving growth

Pink Energy is driving some of this nationwide growth, considering that seven of the eight markets it serves fall outside the top 10 solar states by capacity. We’ve already expanded to two new states in Indiana and Missouri in 2019 and are eyeing other opportunities. But we’re not just a residential solar company. We have a commercial solar division, and we also take care of roofing needs for both sectors as well.
